Dragons down Cardinals, fall to Panthers

Tiffin University (1-8) picked up their first win of 2017, beating Wheeling Jesuit 5-4 in 8 innings but fell in their second game of the day 5-2 to Kentucky Wesleyan.

Wheeling Jesuit took advantage of a single and error with runners on base to plate 2 runs in the second inning and take an early 2-0 lead. TU came back in the third inning, mounting a two out rally. Brooke Lambert singled followed byKate-Lynn Urgo reaching on an error at third. Libby Crowfollowed with an RBI single and TU added to it whenJamie Sevenish drove in 2 runs with another single. After a stolen base, Michelle Poe drove in another run with a single, as TU plated 3 unearned runs in the inning and took a 4-2 lead.

The Cardinals bounced back in the 6th inning, scoring two unearned runs of their own. Kimmy Reynolds cut off any further damage, though, fanning two with the bases loaded as the Dragons escaped with the game tied 4-4.

As the game went to extra innings, TU reliever April Bennettcame in and fanned two batters with a runner on third base, sending TU to the plate in the bottom of the frame.

With Sevenish on second base (international rules), Poe moved her to third with a sacrifice. She then came home with the game-winning run on Allyson Rock's squeeze play. 

Bennett got the win in relief, tossing 1.2 innings and fanning 2. Reynolds pitched 6.1 innings, allowing 7 hits and just 1 earned run while fanning 7 and walking 4.

Sevenish had 2 RBI while Crow, Poe, and Rock also had RBIs.

In the nightcap against Kentucky Wesleyan, Alayna Lytle got TU on the board first with a home run in the third inning. KWC took advantage of two singles and a stolen base to tie the score in the fourth inning.

TU then jumped ahead in the 6th inning when Michelle Poe singled. After Gabrielle Hess came in to pinch run, Samantha Ringwaltdrilled a double to knock her home. TU led 2-1 heading to the bottom of the inning.

Two TU fielding errors and a stolen base were followed by a double and single to chase starter Tiffany Snell, as Bennett came back in trying to shut down the rally as TU suddenly trailed 3-2. But two more unearned runs crossed the plate on another error, a wild pitch, and a passed ball.

Snell took the loss, allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits over 5 innings. Bennett also tossed an inning of relief.

Ringwalt had 2 doubles for an RBI while Lytle also had a home run.
