TU in 5th after first day at Nationals

Tiffin University remained in the hunt for a third consecutive NCAA National Championship after day one of the indoor meet hosted by Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kansas.

The Dragons were 5th overall after 4 events, with the day's top performance coming from James Ngandu. Ngandu finished 2nd overall in the 5000 meters in 14:00.29.

Tiffin also got points from Vincent Vogel in the long jump, as he finished 7th with a leap of 7.53 meters.

In other final marks, Mackenzi Rickman was 12th overall in the 60 hurdles in 8.05 while Toryko Grace was 13th in the weight throw with 18.26. Reginald Thomas also finished 19th in the 200 meters.

In qualifying preliminary action, Jonte Baker was 2nd and Thomas 4th in the 60 meters. Baker's blistering time of 6.62 ties Lamar Hargrove's school record, while Thomas was right behind in 6.68. Both will compete in the finals on March 10.

Cameron Burrows was also sitting in impressive shape in the heptathlon. Burrows was second overall with 3217 points with three events remaining.
