Baseball Earns Series Split at Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Jake Monnin spun a gem on the mound to help lead Tiffin baseball to a 5-1 victory in game one before Cedarville came back for a 10-7 win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Dragons and Yellow Jackets finish the four-game series with two wins apiece, splitting the doubleheaders on both days. After today's games, TU improves to 2-6 in G-MAC play.

As mentioned, the TU pitching was the story of the first game, as Monnin went five strong innings and allowed just one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Hunter Carson (1.2 inn.) and Jacob Boyd (0.1 inn.) finished the seven-inning contest with scoreless frames.

Tiffin got on the board right away in the first inning as Brayden Callihan reached on an error and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Dragons tacked on two more in the fourth with back-to-back sacrifice flies off the bats of Kyle Vance and Zach Campbell, and stretched the lead to 4-0 with a Colin BeDell RBI single in the fifth.

Cedarville got their lone run in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch, but Tiffin quickly cancelled it out with a John Heckman sacrifice fly in the sixth as TU went on to win 5-1.

Game two saw more runs cross home plate, as the Dragons scored in four of the first six innings but entered the seventh knotted in a 7-7 tie with the Yellow Jackets.

Cedarville would take the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth, though, scoring three runs and holding the Dragons scoreless in the ninth for the 10-7 win.

Vance went 3-5 from the plate with two runs scored in the second game, while Campbell, John Heckman, and Jack Dennis each recorded a pair of RBI for Tiffin.

After 24-straight road games to open the season, the Dragons will finally return to Tiffin for their home opener on Wednesday as they host Findlay for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 2:00 p.m.
