The Tiffin University baseball team made it two tournament wins in a row on Friday evening, capsizing the Grand Valley State Lakers by the count of 4-3. Freshman Pitcher of the Year Michael Boswell earned his stripes on the mound, and his offense did just enough to get the job done.
Tiffin got on the board first, giving Boswell some breathing room. Singles by Kurt Barbeau and Kyle Lento got the rally rolling. Jay Smith lined to right field allowing Brabeau to move to third, and he trotted home on Alec McCurry's fielder's choice.
The Lakers tied the score a half inning later, using three hits and a Tiffin error to do so. The score remained tied until the 5th inning, when the Lakers took their first lead of the game. Grand Valley State crossed the plate two times on four hits to lead 3-1.
For the Dragons, the deficit was nothing new. Tiffin, having climbed out of a hole against Walsh about 24 hours earlier, did the same in the present. Singles by Jack Dennis, Brayden Callihan, and Barbeau loaded the bases with one out. Kyle Lento pushed Dennis home with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Tiffin, collecting 41% of their runs batted in this season with two outs, showed that the numbers don't lie. Jay Smith laced a double over the center fielder's head that traveled all the 
way to the wall to score both Callihan and Barbeau to give Tiffin a 4-3 lead.
With the lead in hand, it was time for Boswell to work his magic. The young right-hander cruised through the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings allowing only one hit.
Heading to the top of the 9th, it was time to close the door on the Lakers, and Kevin Borst was more than willing to do so.
It wasn't a cake walk for Borst in the 9th, allowing two walks to bring the go ahead run to the plate with two outs. With a 1-2 count, Borst punched out the final batter of the game to nail down his 12th save of the year.
Michael Boswell continues to make his mark at Tiffin, allowing eight hits and three runs over eight innings of work. Boswell fanned five, and is now tied with Luke Fraley for the team lead in wins with six. Michael is also tied with Fraley for the most wins in a single season at Tiffin.
Kevin Borst earned his second consecutive save in the tournament, compiling 12 this season. He is now the all-time leader for saves in a season, and is now tied for the all-time lead in career saves at Tiffin, regardless of divisions.
At the plate, Barbeau and Lento set the table for Tiffin, each finishing with two hits. Jay Smith was the top run producer, collecting a pair of runs batted in.
With their 31st win of the year, the 2016-17 Tiffin University baseball team is now the winningest in program history, surpassing the old mark of 30 wins. The Dragons will continue their march through the GLIAC Tournament tomorrow at 10:30 am against the top seeded Northwood University Timberwolves. Tiffin and Northwood are the only remaining teams without a loss in tournament play.
