Game One
Tiffin threw the first punch in their seven inning bout in the first game of the day. Kurt Barbeau started the frame with a single to center field and advanced to second on Isaac Perry's groundout. Ryan Thomas delivered Kurt safely to the plate with a chopper back up the box to give Tiffin a 1-0 lead. The runs kept coming in the 2nd, with Tiffin tacking on three more. Jack Dennis reached on a fielders choice, and then made the slow trot home on Barbeau's thunderous home run to right field to make it 3-0. Perry then reached on an error, making all the way second base on the Chargers' mishap. Jay Smith continued to give Hillsdale fits, singling to left field to score Perry.
Tiffin starter, Michael Boswell kept Hillsdale off balance, throwing four shutout innings before surrendering a run to the Chargers in the 5th, his final inning of work.
The Dragons countered with a pair of runs in their half of the 5th, using a pair of walks to put Smith and Devon Fisk at second and first respectively. Kyle Lento's single to right field scored Smith and allowed Fisk to scamper to third. Kyle Durham added to the lead, stroking a single to right field to score Fisk and make it a 6-1 contest.
Hillsdale scored two runs in the top of the 7th, and with the bases loaded had a chance to tie or take the lead. That pipe dream didn't last long, as the Dragons closer, Kevin Borst, strolled to the mound needing two outs to earn the save. Borst did most of the work himself, fielding a sharply hit ground ball right back to him to start the game ending 1-2-3 double play.
Boswell earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing one run on five hits, and struckout four. The victory was the first of Boswell's collegiate career. At the plate, Barbeau led the way, finishing 2 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Devon Fisk and Kyle Durham each collected a pair of hits as well.
Game Two
The long ball was a big part of game two, starting with the Chargers in the opening inning. Marc Deitsch surrendered a solo shot to center field, giving Hillsdale its first lead of the day. Tiffin, not to be outdone, lifted off in the bottom of the 1st. Isaac Perry reached on an error by the third baseman, and Jay Smith launched a towering, no doubt about it, drive to left field to reclaim the lead at 2-1. Devon Fisk followed with a single and motored home on a Kyle Lento double to the warning track in right center field to give Tiffin a 3-1 lead.
Another Hillsdale solo home run in the 2nd made it 3-2 Tiffin. In the 3rd, the Dragons found some breathing room with two more runs. Perry led off with a double, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jay Smith walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. A passed ball opened the door for Perry to score, and Smith raced home when Kyle Lento was hung up between first and second to give Tiffin a 5-2 lead.
A run in the 5th and two more in the sixth for Hillsdale tied the score at 5-5. Hunter Carson was masterful in his relief appearance, holding the Chargers scoreless for 2 2/3 innings, and gave his offense an opportunity to find the go ahead run in the later innings.
Tiffin, having not scored since the 3rd inning, stepped to the plate in the 8th with bottom of the lineup due up. Fisk walked, moved to second on an errant throw by the the Chargers' catcher, and was sacrificed to third by Kyle Lento. Kyle Durham was called upon to pinch hit for Tiffin, and fought through a tough at bat, finding a way to get the job done with a sacrifice fly to left field. With a 6-5 lead, Tiffin stayed on the offensive using Jack Dennis' single and Ke'Andre Tidmore's single to put two on with two out for Kurt Barbeau. Having corked one over the fence in game one, Barbeau found the honey hole again with a majestic shot into the evening sky to put Tiffin ahead 9-5.
Kevin Borst came on in the 9th in a no save situation, and allowed his first run of the year, but retired the final batter via a strikeout with the bases loaded to seal a 9-6 victory.
Hunter Carson earned the win in relief, tossing 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, and striking out a pair. At the plate, Barbeau finished 1 for 5 with a home run and three RBI's, Jay Smith was 1 for 2 with two walks a run scored, a home run, and two runs batted in.
Tiffin now moves to 10-8 overall, 4-0 in GLIAC play, and have won 6 of their last 9 games.
