Dragons Split on first afternoon in Florida

The Tiffin University baseball team brought out the bats in their first game in Florida, thumping UVa. Wise 13-2, but were blanked 6-0 by the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers in game two.

Tiffin vs. UVa. Wise

The first two innings of the game were quiet, with the two teams managing only three hits. In the bottom half of the 3rd, Tiffin began the scoring, plating a pair of runs on three hits and a Cavaliers' error. The big blow came from Mitch Anderson, hammering a pitch over the left field wall for his first home run of the season. An inning later, the Dragons were back at it again, plating four more runs on two hits, an error, and four walks.

The flood gates opened in the 5th, as Tiffin added another five runs with four hits. The big blow came with the bases loaded, and Alec McCurry at the plate. McCurry lined a triple into the right field gap, clearing the bases.

The Cavaliers plated a pair of runs in the 6th, making it an 11-2 contest. Tiffin got back those two runs a half inning later, using a Kurt Barbeau long ball to right field making it a 13-2 final score.

On the mound, Kyle Montell picked up where he left off in his last outing, tossing five innings, allowing a run on one hit. At the plate, Tiffin had numerous stars. Alec McCurry finished 2 for 4 with four runs batted in, Kurt Barbeau went 2 for 2 with three runs batted in, and Mitch Anderson added a pair of RBI's with a home run.

Tiffin vs. Kentucky Wesleyan

The Dragons, having defeated the Panthers a little over a week ago, suffered a different fate than their last matchup.

Tiffin sent freshman Hunter Carson to the hill, coming off a relief appearance against Quincy a week ago. Carson worked out of a 1st inning jam, aided by Fernando Nieto picking off a Panther straying too far from 2nd base. Kentucky Wesleyan plated single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings to make it 4-0 Panthers. Two more runs crossed in the 7th, giving Kentucky Wesleyan a 6-0 lead.

Tiffin had their chances offensively, collecting nine hits, but stranded all nine runners. Tiffin, having collected eight bases on balls in game one against UVa. Wise, were held without a walk against the Panthers.

Hunter Carson took the loss on the mound, hurling three innings, and allowing a pair of earned runs.

The split moves the Dragons to 2-4 overall. Tiffin will be back in action tomorrow with a twin bill against the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals with the first pitch at 12:00 PM.
